Prostate is a walnut-sized gland present in men, and is located below the bladder. It surrounds urethra, which is the tube carrying urine from the bladder to the penis. Production of alkaline prostatic fluid is one of the main functions of this gland.
Common Prostate Gland Problems
The prostate gland problems are not always limited only to prostate. Sometimes, faulty cells in prostate gland break away, and through bloodstream, travel to other body parts. They continue the process of invasion and division of the new tissues.
Difficulty in passing the urine is one of the most common signs of prostate gland problem. Change in the shape of prostate gland narrows the urethra, and the patient may experience urgency, weak flow, hesitancy, intermittency and increased frequency of urinating.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is one of the most common prostate gland problems. It is characterized by prostate cells overgrowth that obstructs the flow of urine, and makes it painful.
Prostate cancer is the enlargement of the gland due to tumor, and is a serious prostate gland problem. This cancer is usually symptomless during early stages, but if left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body. Some of the common symptoms of prostate cancer are difficulty in passing the urine, pain while urinating and blood in urine. No one knows the exact cause of this cancer, but race, heredity and age are the recognized risk factors.
Another common prostate gland problem is prostatitis, which is painful and uncomfortable infection or inflammation of prostate gland. Main symptoms of prostatitis are difficulty in urination, pain on ejaculation, need to pee more often, pain while urinating and ache in lower back, thighs, genitals and/or lower abdomen.
Proper prostate gland treatment is required to deal with any prostate gland problem, but there are few things that can be done to help prevent it, or deal with its symptoms. Eat zinc-rich food or take zinc supplements. Some of the foods rich in zinc are shellfish, pine nuts seeds and pumpkin seeds. Few natural remedies such as rye pollen tablets and saw palmetto can also be quite helpful. Taking sitz bath can help reduce the swelling and provide some relief from the pain. Avoid taking alcohol, soft drinks, spicy foods and nicotine as stress relievers. Regular ejaculations can help relieve the congestion in the gland.
Doctors usually prescribe the antibiotics to deal with prostate gland problems, but in rare cases, when the body does not respond to the medication, surgery may be required, where full or part of prostate gland needs to be removed. If taking antibiotics, make sure to complete the full course so that all the infection is cleared.
