There are some people who have their sleep disrupted because of a physical reason during the night. They may find themselves awakening in the morning without feeling refreshed even though they have gotten a seven to eight hour night’s sleep.
They may also find that they are chronically tired during the daytime, and may even find that they wake up in the morning with a headache. These are all common signs of sleep apnea, in which the person will stop breathing for short periods of time during the night, at which point the body will wake itself up to start to breathe again.
Even though the person might not remember these times of waking up in the night, the body is still not being allowed to get the deep sleep that it needs to feel refreshed in the morning. In addition, the body’s tissues are being deprived of the full amount of oxygen that they need, which is the reason for the headaches in the morning.
Types and Factors
Sleep apnea can be found in a couple of different forms. The obstructive sleep apnea is where the tissues of the nose and throat are enlarged for some reason. The tonsils can be a problem in this type of sleep apnea, since they are out of the way during the day time, but when the person lays down to sleep at night, the tonsils press on the airway and make it difficult to breathe.
Normally, however, the sleep apnea is caused when the throat muscles and tongue relax while the person is sleeping. This can cause them to fall back into the throat and obstruct the airway. Often, the person will wake up in the night because of the snoring that he is doing, which is caused by these tissues blocking the airway.
There are some factors that can increase the chances that the person will have a problem with sleep apnea and will need treatment. First, drinking alcohol should be avoided if the person has trouble with sleep apnea because it further relaxes the muscles and will escalate the problem.
Second, people who are overweight will often have a problem with sleep apnea because they have more tissue in their throat area because of the extra fat in their bodies. There are also some medications that can escalate sleep apnea in some people, such as those medications for insomnia, allergies, depression and anxiety. Any sedatives can escalate a problem with sleep apnea and should be avoided where possible.
