Hazards to Your Health
There are literally millions of reasons to stop smoking, but the number one reason is for your health as well as for others around you. Smoking affects many parts of the body, most directly the lungs. In addition, it causes increased risks of heart problems as well. Because a person cannot live without their heart and their lungs, it is beneficial to stop smoking now to begin to decrease risks.
Emphysema is one of the most common diseases found in people who smoke. This is a disease that causes the lungs to retain fluid in them, decreasing the capacity and making it difficult to breathe. As the disease progresses, many reach the point where they must be on oxygen all the time or even require a ventilator to help them breathe.
Smoking also causes problems with blood vessels and arteries throughout the body. Because of this, the heart has problems providing blood to the body, resulting in it having to work much harder. As the heart is required to work harder, the muscles begin to grow leading to a condition known as an enlarged heart. An enlarged heart is a condition that can lead to death.
Risks To Others
Many people are beginning to realize the extreme health hazards that are associated with smoking of any sort. In addition, medical science has proven that the risk extends to others around the smoker as well, not just to the smoker.
Friends and family members exposed to the smoker’s exhaled smoke can lead to health problems for them as well, including emphysema and heart disease. Because of these risks to others, many local governments are placing bans on smoking in public places.
As people begin to see that smoking is hazardous to their health, they begin to search for ways to kick the habit. For many, this is not an easy task. There are many options available for those looking to quit smoking. The most important part of quitting smoking is to never quit trying to quit.
